The Art of 'Business'
During this phase of my career, I used mixed media to express a particular atmosphere, emotion or personality, which was commissioned from me, by clients near and far. I spent time talking to people about what their commission meant to them, their relationship with the subject matter, to really get to grips with what it was I should express in the piece. It meant I could be creative and start to explore my materials, working from home whilst I built myself back up and got over the isolating and debilitating effects of Tuberculosis. It meant I could still explore human emotions and behaviour, something that's always fascinated me, without facing my own somewhat fragile emotional state of mind. You can read people's testimonials here.
Although I was a bit delusional at times about how ok I was, this project gave me the time to push myself during different stages along the way, that with time really helped to build me back up to the confident self I am today. I learnt to build a website, and use social media. I printed business cards and flyers. I attended courses on how to run a business and learnt how to fill in my tax return. I went to trade fairs, craft markets, took part in exhibitions. I then went on to really push myself, doing demonstrations, talks, and workshops. After this period of development, I feel ready to explore art that is more personal to me and to innovate my techniques.
