Searching For The Light No. 4

This painting won 1st prize for the Scott Creative Arts Foundation, Emerging Artist Award, 2023. The theme for that years exhibition was Light. After walking and observing life in my hometown, Keighley, I decided to paint an everyday scene taken from the entrance of a factory. I was drawn to a loaded yellow skip sitting just inside - a mundane object many people will walk past everyday. This particular factory is now used as a stone masons, and the walls, beams, pillars and floors are caked in thick dull dust.  However a moment of sunlight scattered this scene in an explosion of joy. Getting to know the industrial parts of my town on a deeper level has revealed to me just how full of life they are. There is a complete mishmash of old and new factories, half looking burnt out and tired, but still a hive of activity and work.
